Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is an AAM-accredited, American Renaissance estate
in a spectacular subtropical setting on Biscayne Bay. Vizcaya consists of 14 National
Historic Landmark buildings on 50 acres of grounds, with 2,500 art and 35,000 archival
objects.
The museum is in midst of developing new
programs to engage the local community in learning through the arts, history, and
the environment, and embarking on a government-funded $50-million capital program
to rehabilitate the main house, gardens, and the Vizcaya village, which will open
to the public for the first time. Vizcaya attracts approximately 150,000 visitors
each year.
Primary Responsibilities
The Deputy Director for Collections and
Curatorial Affairs supervises a Collections and Archives Manager, two Collections
Care Specialists, and consulting conservators hired to undertake specific projects
at the museum. The Deputy Director will oversee or play a leading role in collections
management, collections care, conservation planning, research, and interpretation,
the latter including curatorial oversight of the museum's new Contemporary Arts
Project, which invites two artists per year to develop site-specific installations
at Vizcaya. In addition, the Deputy Director will bring an integral perspective
to the museum's capital program. This individual will be responsible for participating
in fundraising to enhance both general and collections-specific support of Vizcaya.
