Art of the Western Saddle |
1/22/10 - 7/31/10
|
|
Venue: American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum
The western saddle is one of the great executions of form and function merging into a third greater thing – art. Its design is built around use, lightness, durability and fit to give the rider the ability to stay on board while at the same time not getting in the way of the horse, all the while being able to hold an 800-pound steer by only a rope wound around the saddle horn.
But more than a tool, western saddles are iconic representations of the work of an indigenous root-based culture in America. As much a part of the cowboy way as a hat and a pair of boots, saddles spoke of work in a unique vocation. Work performed by man and animal together, a task that remains remarkably unchanged due to the nature of the work itself – the moving and caring of livestock.
Like any tool, the saddle became an extension of those who used it and because of that became subject to personalization. That unique personalization and embellishment – call it character – is the basis for a new exhibition opening at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in this month. The Art of the Western Saddle will feature 16 glorious examples of the saddlemaker’s art. Curated by western historian and author William C. Reynolds, the exhibit will feature silver-mounted saddles from important private collections and museums across the country. The collection will display the saddles' unique design, craftsmanship and graceful merging of silver, gold and leather.
Many of the saddles have never been exhibited in public, and the exhibition will be a unique opportunity to see the pinnacle of craftsmanship, embellishing the primary tool of the American cowboy. The exhibit opens January 22, 2010, and will continue through July 31, 2010, at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo, Texas.

Postcards and Perceptions: Culture as Tourism |
2/12/10 - 1/30/11
|
|
Postcards provide a glimpse at what is noteworthy about a place. Although there are no rules for postcard content, they often depict popular tourist locations. Widespread use of the picture postcard occurred around 1890. During this time, tourists were flocking to South Florida. This new and forbidding landscape must have seemed foreign to some. For others, a chance to come in contact with the “unconquered” Seminole Indians was most significant. Throughout the era of tourist villages the postcard was a common souvenir. It depicted the Seminole Tribe of Florida in all ranges of flattering and sometimes not so-flattering terms. Be that as it may, this selection of postcards is an invaluable record of history and a testament to a resilient and resourceful group of people. Join us as we examine the complex social identity of the Seminole Tribe of Florida through postcards.

Neuroscience confirms that play significantly effects the development of a young child’s brain. Social science studies indicate that play helps a child build interpersonal and self-regulation abilities. Futurists point to the global economy and the need for a workforce that can imagine, innovate and empathize. As leaders in early childhood education, children’s museums engage infants, toddlers and children through play to think critically and creatively. Exhibits and programs provide children with tangible interactions that challenge them to accomplish small and large feats. Museum outreach and community partnerships ensure that children of all backgrounds and abilities find ways to play and learn about the world in which we live. The results of these efforts yield dramatic rewards — children with critical cognitive, motor, social and emotional competencies that enable them to reach their full potential and to be ready to participate as 21st century learners and contributors.
Peter L. Benson, president and CEO of Minneapolis-based Search Institute, will address how children's museums can help build Developmental Assets in youth through exhibits, programs, advocacy and partnerships during the Saturday, May 8, 2010, plenary session at InterActivity.
Hosted by Minnesota Children's Museum.

2010 AASLH Annual Meeting; Winds of Opportunity; Oklahoma City |
8/22/10 - 8/25/10
|
|
Venue: As a host city, Oklahoma City offers unique examples and inspiration.
Oklahoma offers the perfect locale for examining how the winds of opportunity can alter an economy, change a life, or build a community. As home to major oil and gas producing giants, Oklahoma is keenly aware of market fluctuations and national trends. As energy prices skyrocketed in 2008, it also allowed the oil and gas industry to increase their support of cultural and arts activities. Some of the companies that experienced dramatic revenue growth shared some of those profits with museums and cultural entities resulting in substantial support for the development of new museums, renovations, exhibits and program support, and contributions to endowments.
The Winds of Opportunity will gently embrace you in Oklahoma City.

11/11/10 - 11/13/10

How can historic house museums remain relevant to their audiences, when terms as 'the old home place' and 'family' now carry different definitions than they did for the original occupants? Conference topics range from new theories and learning systems to practical applications and revisited methods for guiding germane museum programming, given today’s museum-going public differs greatly from previous generations.
Museum Education Monitor editor Christine Castle is the keynote speaker. The ten conference speakers are respected museum professionals and education theorists from around the country who can give participants ideas to tackle pressing museum issues, given the changing times.
