NEWLY EXTENDED! Cattle Keepers: The Heritage of Seminole Cattle Ranching examines the history of the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s cattle industry. The Seminole cattle industry has its roots in the beginning of the 16th century when the Spanish brought cattle to Florida and continues on today as one of the leading cattle processors in the state of Florida. Come examine this storied history which is not only part of Seminole history but of the entire state of Florida.

Peace Arch International Park is located on the US/Canada border between Blaine, Washington and Surrey, British Columbia. The 40 acre peace park that surrounds the Peace Arch is the location of this annual outdoor sculpture exhibition. Each year, the park’s picturesque landscape and magnificent gardens host family gatherings, picnics, weddings, and annual events of international significance. Over 500,000 visitors tour this international historic site annually. The mission of the international fine arts program is to serve as a catalyst in the development of international fine artists, while creating a greater awareness and appreciation of the Peace Arch and the International Park. The Lost World of Old Europe brings to the United States for the first time more than 160 objects recovered by archaeologists from the graves, towns, and villages of Old Europe

The exhibit features artifacts selected from the permanent collections of the Museum that highlight women from various backgrounds.

Organized by The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. This exhibition will bring together a significant group of the Ringling Museum’s holdings or works from the Gavet-Vanderbilt collection, including paintings, sculpture, metalwork, furniture, ceramics, cameos, watches, and miniatures. Although some will be familiar to the Ringling’s regular visitors, many have rarely or never been available for public viewing. See this exhibition during regular Museum hours, 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. This exhibition is included with regular Museum admission. Call 941.358.3180 for advance tickets.

The western saddle is one of the great executions of form and function merging into a third greater thing – art. Its design is built around use, lightness, durability and fit to give the rider the ability to stay on board while at the same time not getting in the way of the horse, all the while being able to hold an 800-pound steer by only a rope wound around the saddle horn. But more than a tool, western saddles are iconic representations of the work of an indigenous root-based culture in America. As much a part of the cowboy way as a hat and a pair of boots, saddles spoke of work in a unique vocation. Work performed by man and animal together, a task that remains remarkably unchanged due to the nature of the work itself – the moving and caring of livestock. Like any tool, the saddle became an extension of those who used it and because of that became subject to personalization. That unique personalization and embellishment – call it character – is the basis for a new exhibition opening at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in this month. The Art of the Western Saddle will feature 16 glorious examples of the saddlemaker’s art. Curated by western historian and author William C. Reynolds, the exhibit will feature silver-mounted saddles from important private collections and museums across the country. The collection will display the saddles' unique design, craftsmanship and graceful merging of silver, gold and leather. Many of the saddles have never been exhibited in public, and the exhibition will be a unique opportunity to see the pinnacle of craftsmanship, embellishing the primary tool of the American cowboy. The exhibit opens January 22, 2010, and will continue through July 31, 2010, at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo, Texas.

Postcards provide a glimpse at what is noteworthy about a place. Although there are no rules for postcard content, they often depict popular tourist locations. Widespread use of the picture postcard occurred around 1890. During this time, tourists were flocking to South Florida. This new and forbidding landscape must have seemed foreign to some. For others, a chance to come in contact with the “unconquered” Seminole Indians was most significant. Throughout the era of tourist villages the postcard was a common souvenir. It depicted the Seminole Tribe of Florida in all ranges of flattering and sometimes not so-flattering terms. Be that as it may, this selection of postcards is an invaluable record of history and a testament to a resilient and resourceful group of people. Join us as we examine the complex social identity of the Seminole Tribe of Florida through postcards.

Texas museums are facing many challenges in these uncertain economic times. In addition to managing in a slower economy, many of our museums in Texas are also recovering from devastating weather conditions and are busy at work restoring their institutions. As non-profit organizations dedicated to preserving and promoting natural and cultural history and the visual arts, we take our missions very seriously and refuse to be “derailed.”

Historically Reconstruction ended in North Carolina on July 4, 1868. Join Union soldiers at Bennett Place as they discuss the days after the surrender and Reconstruction in the South. Living Historians will demonstrate life of the Northern soldiers who served under General Sherman at the close of the American Civil War. Soldiers will be encamped around the Bennett Farm throughout the weekend.

Experience what life was like for the people of Piedmont North Carolina during the beginning months of the Civil War. A recruitment station and encampment will be set up on the grounds of the Bennett Farm, much like camps established throughout North Carolina and the South, recruiting men to defend the Southern cause. 19th century civilian interpreters will enlist in the army and be transformed into soldiers. Other civilian interpreters will demonstrate domestic chores such as cooking, gardening, sewing for their husbands and sons heading off to war. Soldiers will share their stories of enlistment, and their new life in the Confederate army. Visitors will have the opportunity to “enlist” and become soldiers as well.
